“Slaves of Christ Jesus”
Slave is one who owes all of themselves; their life, resources, breathe,
body, all of themselves to their Master.
“Servant” is a translation of the Greek word doulos, which means more
literally “a slave or bondservant, someone who sets aside all rights of his own
to serve another.” Because the word slave carries such a negative connotation
to our modern sensitivities, we often choose the word servant instead. However,
servant does not quite capture the real meaning of doulos. Paul said he was a
“slave” to Christ.
Paul, who is most knowledgeable person, wisest and knows Law and Word of
God from inside out. Who persecuted Christians and was a devout Jew. What did
he say about himself?
Paul humbled himself and considered all his status in vain and introduced
himself in Romans 1:1 as bond-servant(NASB) or servant(ESV) of Christ
Jesus. Before telling everything about who he is and his purpose of writing to
them, Paul tells his identity in Christ, that is, servant and nobody.
So what does “servant” “slave” or “bond-servant” convey?
-> Setting oneself for Jesus alone, bound in joy to Him and satisfied in Him
alone.
-> A slave owes their full body to the Master.
->A servant of Christ knows who is the King. A servant of Christ is one who
has voluntarily with his whole heart, mind and body set aside his or her personal rights in order to love, serve,
and obey the will of God in Christ Jesus. Servants of Christ die daily to sin
and fleshly desires, allowing Christ’s life to flow through them (Galatians
2:20).
Dear brothers and sisters, once we were slave to sin in the body through
the flesh. Having been freed from sin and died to sin in Christ(Romans 6:6), we
become slaves to righteousness received in Christ(Romans 6:18).
God has revealed to us the riches of His grace(Eph 1:7), so I pray we all
together give all of ourselves as slaves of Christ who has poured on us
according to the riches of His grace and mercy.
"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who
according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living
hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead"- 1 Peter
1:3
